On Tuesday, December 17, CEA members and guests came together for some lighthearted fun at the first annual holiday party at Zapatista Restaurant in Chicago.

 CEA hosted its annual Jazzin' at the Shedd summer professional development and social networking event on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at John G. Shedd Aquarium. This year's professional development topic was presented by Dr. Stafford Hood, Director of the Center for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

 Evidence-based Programs: What Programs and What Evidence?April 24, 2012

An "evidence-based program" has come to mean a brand name model program of some sort supported by at least one impact evaluation showing positive effects. There are other ways to define what is meant by a program, however, each with different implications for the nature of the supporting evidence. This talk explored those variants and concluded that the conventional definition is overly narrow.

The event, which was jointly hosted by The Evaluator's Institute (TEI), the Chicagoland Evaluation Association (CEA), and the DePaul University Master of Public Health (MPH) Program and Department of Psychology, was held on April 24, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at DePaul University (DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd 11th Floor, North Suite) in Chicago, IL.

 A Gathering for Foundation Staff and Evaluators Interested in Working Together: The purpose of this event was to bring together local evaluators and foundation representatives to learn about each other's work and discuss the potential for future collaborations. It was held on February 21 in Room 8002 of the DePaul Center on 5 East Jackson Blvd (Chicago).

 Several CEA members met for coffee and networking with fellow evaluators at Noble Tree Coffee. In addition to sharing ideas about recent and upcoming evaluation projects, the group also discussed current events in the field of evaluation.

 The annual CEA business meeting was held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 13, 2010 in Room 5010 at National-Louis University (NLU) in Chicago. During the meeting, the member discussed our progress on our goals for 2010 and our projected goals for 2011.

This event combined the aquatic wonders of the Shedd Aquarium, the cool urban jazz of Detour JazFunk, and an opportunity to socialize with CEA colleagues. We kicked off the event with an informative briefing and tour of several exhibit spaces led by Linda Wilson, Shedd's director of audience research and evaluation.

The event was held on August 4, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at John G. Shedd Aquarium (1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60605).

Several CEA members braved the storms on Wednesday, June 23 to socialize at Hopleaf Bar (5148 N Clark St. in Chicago). It was a great opportunity to catch up with old CEA friends, make some new ones, and share evaluation experiences.

This professional development event provided an opportunity for people to hear the talks presented by CEA members at the American Evaluation Association (AEA) conference in November 2009 (and at other notable recent conferences). The line-up was:

  • "The Impact of Evaluation Capacity Building Activities" by Leah C. Neubauer, DePaul University

  • "Starting and Succeeding as an Independent Evaluation Consultant" by Judah Viola, National-Louis University

On April 23, 2009, Dr. Melvin Mark, professor of Psychology at Pennsylvania State University, gave a talk on his latest book, "What Counts as Credible Evidence in Applied Research and Evaluation Practice?" Copies of Dr. Mark's book were available at a discount and signed by the author.

On September 24, 2008, CEA hosted a brown bag session on reporting evaluation findings to stakeholders. During the session CEA members presented innovative examples of their work and solicited feedback from their colleagues.
